You should not confuse Marine Safety and Maritime Security. These terms are related and often used interchangeably. But they do not mean the same. Maritime security refers primarily to the protection of ships and their cargo from external threats such as piracy. 

And maritime safety ensures the protection of people in circumstances where natural or accidental hazards exist. Often these natural dangers can be more damaging and have more negative consequences than piracy, smuggling or other external threats if they are ignored by the ship’s crew. That has been the case of several disasters that could have been avoided or minimised if maritime safety had been taken into account. Some examples are the disaster involving:

• The Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Titanic.
• The Motor Ship (MS) Estonia.
• The MS Herald of Free Enterprise.

Maritime safety is a must to avoid injuries and casualties among crew members and passengers aboard vessels, as well as to those in the vicinity of bodies of water. That is why we provide Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) that assist in the recovery of Persons in Water (PIWs) who may be at risk of drowning, hypothermia, and even death.

Our selection of maritime safety products complies with maritime standards, which are the accepted industry standards for maritime safety. The LifeJacket 165N has been approved for maritime standard EN396 and maritime standard EN 1095 with a deck harness.

The BS EN 396 is the standard for Lifejackets and personal and buoyancy aids. According to this standard, lifejackets should have a buoyancy of no less than 150 Newtons for adults and should be used:

• in tidal waters 
• when foul weather clothing is being used
• where crew members cannot help themselves as a result of an injury or exhaustion

The EN 1095  is the standard for deck safety harnesses and safety lines, which determines the requirements for performance, sizing, marking and test methods.

To avoid fatal accidents, make sure that your life jacket is correctly adjusted.
